Kyoto Protocol Country Status:

The Kyoto Protocol splits the nations of the world into three categories depending on the state of a nations development.

Annex I countries are made up of the industrially developed countries that were also a member of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development as of 1992. Major countries that classify as Annex I include the United States, Japan, and Great Britain. This category also includes countries with economies in transition (EIT) including Russia and various countries in Europe.

Annex II countries are the countries that fall within Annex I but are not a part of the EIT countries. Countries in this category provide financial aid to help developing countries with emissions reduction. Annex II countries also help EIT countries develop environmentally friendly technology

Non-Annex I countries are comprised of developing nations such as China, India, and Brazil
